Friends of the Amherst Town Library

A note from your Friends of the Library...

The Friends of the Amherst Town Library are a Friendly group of over one hundred volunteers interested in supporting, enhancing and promoting the excellence of this local library. We help out in the areas of "it would be nice but…the money isn't in the budget," or "the staff is already stretched too thin."

Membership does not require a lot of active involvement although we do love to welcome any new helping hands! We:

  • Fundraise with 3 annual book sales, our annual Trivia Night, and online bookselling.
  • Subsidize library services and programming including museum passes, concerts, and children's room activities.
  • Arrange displays and art exhibits including the ever popular Student Art Show.
  • Finance larger gifts and contribute funds for capital improvements.

We wholly depend on contributions generated from annual membership dues, fundraisers and public donations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I go to donate my books and other items?

Donations should be brought to the Circulation desk. We cannot pick up donations (though special arrangements may be made for large collections of high quality books).

I have a lot of items to donate. Should I just bring them in?

We will accept large donations. If you are donating 5 or more boxes of books, we would prefer that arrangements be made in advance with the Circulation desk to make sure to have space and ability to process them.

How much can I claim as a charitable donation?

We do not determine the value of the donation. Receipts can be provided designating how many paperbacks and hardbacks were donated.

What happens to the items I donate?

Depending on the quality and condition of the donated items, they will be put into our book sale; put in general collection; given away or recycled.

In addition, The Friends run an ongoing book sale at the library located in the Bookcase on the right as you enter the library.
