A note from your Friends of the Library...
The Friends of the Amherst Town Library are a group of over one hundred volunteers interested in supporting, promoting and enhancing the excellence of this local library. We help out in the areas of "it would be nice but…the money isn't in the budget," or "the staff is already stretched too thin."
The Friends of Library organize & staff three annual book sales, donate money for special gifts (such as computers, books, tapes, CD’s, DVDs), decorate for the winter holidays, organize and arrange for displays, exhibits, concerts and several special guests. We also subsidize annual passes to the Boston Museum of Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Currier Gallery and the Peabody Essex Museum in Essex, MA.
Our support to the library depends entirely on contributions raised in one of two ways: annual memberships and the annual used book sales. Your contribution of $15 or more makes you a member of The Friends. Once you are a member, you will receive the Friends newsletter Friendly Footnotes which will keep you informed of events and volunteer opportunities. The Friends of the Amherst Town Library would like to invite you to join our growing organization. Your membership helps to offset some of the Library expenses for special programs such as Museum Trips, the Student Art Show, Holiday Decorations, Museum Passes, the Summer Program for Children, and other worthwhile projects. By sending in your Membership dues with the form below, you will be helping the Amherst community and the many activities sponsored by our Library. For new and returning members alike we thank you for your support.
With your membership comes a free subscription to the Friends quarterly newsletter, Friendly Footnotes, which gives advance notice on upcoming library programs and events, new book lists and feature articles.

Thank you for your interest in making a donation to the Amherst Town Library. Amherst Town Library welcomes your donated books, audio books, movies, music, and magazines. Your donation will be added to the library’s collection or sold at the book sale to help enhance our programs and services.
We will accept
- Hardcover and paperback books in good condition. We cannot use damaged books (e.g. broken bindings, missing pages, soiled, musty or moldy, excessive writing in the text, or water damage)
- Commercially published media (e.g. CDs, DVDs)
- Antique magazines (prior to 1960 in good condition)
We cannot accept
- Damaged books with broken bindings, missing pages, soiled, musty, moldy, smoke or water damage, or excessive writing in the text.
- Clearly outdated materials (see "specified limits" section below )
- Magazines (bound or unbound) older than current, periodicals, academic journals
- Condensed books (Readers Digest)
- Professional journals
- Non-commercially produced media, including copies on paper, CD, DVD, VHS or cassette.
- Workbooks or study guides that are partially or wholly filled in
- Computer programs
- VHS movies or cassette music tapes (books on cassette are OK)
We accept certain materials within specified limits:
- Price guides and almanacs (less than 2 years old)
- Medical and financial advice books (less than 5 years old)
- Travel guidebooks (less than 5 years old, or antique)
- Computer manuals (less than 5 years old)
- Textbooks (less than 5 years old)
- Test preparation guides (less than 5 years old)
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I go to donate my books and other items?
Donations should be brought to the Circulation desk. We cannot pick up donations (though special arrangements may be made for large collections of high quality books).
I have a lot of items to donate. Should I just bring them in?
We will accept large donations. If you are donating 5 or more boxes of books, we would prefer that arrangements be made in advance with the Circulation desk to make sure to have space and ability to process them.
How much can I claim as a charitable donation?
We do not determine the value of the donation. Receipts can be provided designating how many paperbacks and hardbacks were donated.
What happens to the items I donate?
Depending on the quality and condition of the donated items, they will be put into our book sale; put in general collection; given away or recycled.

The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale is usually held the third Saturday in September,.
The 2016 Book Sale will be held Saturday, September 17 at the Amherst Congregational Church. More...
The Friends also hold two smaller sales: on the common during the Town's Fourth of July celebrations and a special holiday sale at the Library in December.
In addition, The Friends run an ongoing book sale at the library located near the circulation desk in the Boardman Room.
